To date, about 500,000 patients have undergone Gamma Knife surgery and more than 2,500 peer-reviewed papers have been published about the procedure. The Gamma Knife Center at The Valley Hospital features the Leksell Gamma Knife Perfexion, the newest, most advanced technology for treating noncancerous and cancerous brain tumors, arteriovenous malformations and neurological disorders like trigeminal neuralgia.
Gamma Knife treatment is often the preferred treatment for patients who are not candidates for surgery or radiation therapy because of the location of the tumor, age or other health considerations. It can also serve as a supplemental treatment to conventional neurosurgery.
Research has shown that Gamma Knife treatment can be as effective as whole brain radiation therapy (WBRT) without harm to surrounding tissues or other side effects associated with WBRT. Gamma Knife treatment can also be repeated for original tumors or used for additional tumors with little or no effect on healthy tissues.
The Gamma Knife Center treats acoustic neuromas, arteriovenous malformations, astrocytomas, craniopharyngiomas, gliomas, meningiomas, metastatic brain tumors, pineal tumors, pituitary tumors, primary brain tumors, skull base tumors, trigeminal neuralgia and vascular malformations.
