A Calming Massage Before Treatment

After your imaging studies have been completed and before your Gamma Knife treatment begins, a certified massage therapist will visit you in the waiting suite. You will be offered a free ‘m’ technique massage of your hands and arms, a holistic gentle therapy that has been used throughout The   Valley Hospital for several years to relax women in labor and to soothe newborn babies.

“The ‘m’ technique involves gentle stroking movements that are done a set number of times in a set pattern with a set pressure and speed,” says certified massage therapist Maureen Bottiglieri, R.N., CMT.

The ‘m’ technique works on skin receptors that send relaxing signals to the brain.

“Patients are pleasantly surprised to be offered this wonderful massage,” says Linda Ohnikian, R.N., nursing supervisor of the Department of Radiation Oncology and nurse navigator for the Gamma Knife Center. “Patients feel pampered, and some of them are so relaxed they sleep throughout their treatment.”
